ChatGPT Atlas shuts down Sunday. Do this before it does.

If anyone at your business browses in ChatGPT Atlas, you have three days.

ChatGPT Atlas shuts down on Sunday, August 9, 2026. Your bookmarks, your open tabs and your browsing history do not move anywhere on their own. Export them this week or they are gone. Your ChatGPT conversations are fine, by the way. Those are stored with your account, not with the browser.

That is the urgent part. The part that matters more comes after.

What actually happened

OpenAI launched Atlas on October 21, 2025. A real browser, built on Chromium, with ChatGPT sitting in a sidebar and an agent mode that could click around websites and get things done for you. It shipped on macOS, with Windows, iOS and Android listed as coming soon.

Windows never came. On July 9, 2026, OpenAI said Atlas was being folded into the ChatGPT desktop app and a new Chrome extension. Nine months and change, start to finish.

In plain English: the company that spent a year telling everyone the browser was the next big thing just closed its own browser and moved the good parts into an app and a plugin.

Your three day checklist

If Atlas is on any machine in your business, do this before Sunday. Fifteen minutes, tops.

1. Export your bookmarks. Open Atlas’s bookmark manager and export to an HTML file. Then import that file into Chrome (More, then Bookmarks and lists, then Import bookmarks and settings). This is the only piece that migrates cleanly, so do it first.

2. Save your open tabs. They do not transfer either. Bookmark them, or paste the URLs into a document. Whichever is faster.

3. Grab what you need from history. It does not come with you. If there is a page you found in June and cannot name, go find it now.

4. Expect to log in again, everywhere. OpenAI offers a cookie export where it can, but those files cannot be imported into another browser anyway, and a stolen one lets someone impersonate you. Treat it as sensitive or skip it entirely. If you have been putting off getting your team onto a password manager, this is the weekend.

5. After Sunday, uninstall it. Atlas stops getting security updates. A browser sees every page you open and every password you type, and an abandoned one is not something you want sitting on a work laptop.

Then pick the replacement. The rebuilt ChatGPT desktop app has an in-app browser with tabs, downloads and autofill, and there is now a ChatGPT extension for Chrome. For most small businesses the extension is the better answer, because it rides on the browser your team already uses and your IT setup already knows how to manage.

What this means for you

Here is why this is worth five minutes of your attention instead of thirty seconds.

Atlas is not a one-off.

• OpenAI announced in March 2026 that it was discontinuing the Sora video app, roughly six months after launch. The API behind it is set to go dark on September 24, 2026.
• Google shut down Project Mariner, its browser agent, on May 4, 2026, and folded the technology into Gemini.

Three products, from the two best funded AI companies on the planet. None of them lasted eighteen months.

None of that is a scandal. Big companies kill experiments, and that is what experiments are for. The mistake sits on the other side of the transaction: treating a nine month old AI app like it is Excel.

So here is the opinionated bit. The real risk in AI right now is not the model. It is the wrapper. The models keep getting better and cheaper and more interchangeable. The apps built on top of them have the shelf life of yogurt. Every week someone launches a slick tool that does one job beautifully, and a chunk of those companies will not exist in 2028.

You are allowed to use those tools. You are not allowed to build your quoting process on one without a plan.

The four questions

Before a new AI tool touches anything that matters, ask four things. This takes two minutes and it has saved businesses entire quarters.

1. Can I get my data out, today? Not “do they have an API.” Go and find the export button before you need it. If there is not one, you are renting, not using.

2. Is this the company’s business, or its side quest? Atlas was a side quest. ChatGPT is the business. Side quests get cancelled when the roadmap gets crowded.

3. What breaks on Monday if this vanishes on Sunday? If the honest answer is “our client onboarding,” it does not go in until you have answered question four.

4. Who is the fallback? Name it now, while you are calm. Even if the fallback is “we do it by hand for a week.”

Anything that fails question three stays a nice-to-have that one person uses. That is not being a pessimist, it is the same discipline that keeps shadow AI from turning into an incident. Know what is in use, and know what depends on it.

The verdict

Move now, and do not mourn it.

Export your Atlas data before Sunday, switch to the Chrome extension or the desktop app, and get on with your day. Fifteen minutes and you are whole again. Atlas was a decent product that lost a roadmap fight, and the useful half of it survives in a form that is easier to manage anyway.

Then write those four questions somewhere your team can see them. The next tool to disappear will not send you a warning email nine months early, and it will not be the one you were watching.
